From the Shadows
charcoal and chalk
My piece depicts a middle eastern woman wearing a hijab with a very serious look on her face. The most obvious element in my piece is value. The most obvious principle is contrast.
To create this piece I first started off with a grid, portraits aren't my strong suit so I used that to help me map out and proportionate everything. I mapped lightly and then gradually began to add my darker values and create contrast.
My inspiration for this piece was to create a piece that evoked an emotion and drew in your attention. The emotion that I tried to convey was seriousness and a sense of focus.
My goal as an artist was to work with a media that I'm not as promising in, try to improve my skills and create a successful piece of art. I reached my goal because I'm satisfied with how my piece turned out.
By creating this piece I learned that you can very easily turn your mistakes into something that adds to your piece instead of taking away from it. I also learned that if a specific part of a piece is stressing you out and you can't get it right, then it's easier to move on and comeback to it. Overall I like this piece because charcoal isn't my best media to work with and I think it was successful. I will use what I learn on this piece for future works because it will prevent me from becoming stressed out and giving up.

reGrowth
acrylic paint & canvas
My piece depicts a woman from the back . She has long wavy hair that flows over her shoulder and down to her lower back. The middle of her back is replaced with just the spine and ribs and then proceeds back to normal on her lower back. There are flowers placed across the bottom and in her hair.
I created this art with acrylic paint, I lightly mapped my idea on my canvas and then used many layers to create the desired outcome.
The big idea behind this piece was for it to symbolize regrowth and self investment. Last year I created a similar piece that symbolized anxiety and this year I wanted to create something that showed growth and development of self love. I feel that the flowers and ribs create that affect.
My goals for this piece were to create a sense of comfort or hope;no matter how low you get or how self destructive you become, there can also be a period of regrowth where you put that energy back into yourself and essentially rebuild yourself.
My overall thoughts on this piece are good. I'm highly satisfied with how it came out and the final product of my efforts.
Dreamville
acrylic paint &canvas
My piece depicts J.Cole sitting on the hood of a grey/silver truck with the dreamville logo written in cursive on the back window of the truck. The background of the piece is very colorful and has different values and transitions throughout it.
I created my art by taking different poses of J.Cole from his music video Everybody Dies and took several sketches to find the position that I wanted. Afterwards, I took a picture of the pose I wanted to emulate and put it on an app called Airbrush to make some of the features elongated and deformed to try out different features and see which ones I wanted to change. Once I had decided on which features I wanted to emphasize and which spaces I wanted to use for what, I began to sketch. Then I traced my sketch onto my canvas and began to blend the colors in the background and add my more defining features.
I really wanted to symbolize J.Cole and his music. J.Cole as an artist isn't an artist that over dresses and decks himself out with jewelry. He's very humble and aware of where he came from, I don't believe he's let the fame get to his head too much.
My goals for this piece are quite similar to the idea behind it, in my piece he's wearing some blue jean shorts and a pink t-shirt. He's riding on the hood of an older grey truck and I think the goal was to really create him as an artist and I believe I did a good job. I think execution wise and my technical skill could be improved but overall I think I did good.
My thoughts on this piece are that I like it. I really like the background and his dreads/twists. I'm not as technically skilled as I would like to be but I believe I'm gradually improving and so when I think of where I was and where I am, I'm happy with how my piece turned out.

Intertwined
acrylic & canvas
My piece shows the outline of two people sharing a kiss on a black backgrounds. The two people are only shown through the use of lines and they disperse into knots at the bottom corners.
I created this by lightly mapping out the faces of the two people and tweaking where they would touch and where they wouldn't . Afterwards I painted the background and transferred my sketch onto my canvas and added the layers of paint.
The big idea behind my piece was to create something that portrayed the ups and downs of love. The knots represent the "tangles" in life and how the love between the two people bring them peace..
My goals for this piece were to create something delicate with a good message.
My overall thoughts on the piece are good, I really like it and how it turned out.
Untethered
prismacolor pencils
My piece depicts the back of a woman wrapped in sheets, her hair is blowing to the side. The woman is made up of contour lines in bright colors that show movement.
I created my art by lightly mapping it out and then i began whit the light areas. I slowly began to add the colors in the areas that would be darker than the others, like shadowed areas and places with creases.
The big idea behind my piece was to create a realistic woman with a twist on the style.
My goals for this piece were to challenge myself with Prismacolor pencils and try to emulate the style of Wajin Gim, however, I feel like my piece turned out with a completely different style then I was looking forward to creating.
My overall thoughts on the piece are that I like it, I wish it would have turned out more like Gim's style, but I think it's good.
